Concert promoters can easily be thought of as major event planners. Every detail of the concert has to go off without a hitch and that responsibility lies solely with the promoter. Concert promotion is a demanding career that requires serious attention to detail. In order to be an effective and successful concert promoter, a high level of organization is necessary. Losing track of important contact names, dates, telephone numbers or venue information could prove disastrous.

The world of concert promotions is full of contracts, legal agreements, insurance policies and riders. In order to make the best business decisions, a concert promoter has to have a working knowledge of all of these legal documents. Not understanding parts of a contract or rider can lead to confusion and difficulties down the road.

Concert promoters can make a huge amount of money, and then, they can lose money as well. In addition, the concert promoter bears the cost of all advertising promotions and other marketing costs. Promoters these days have a variety of choices for marketing. They can use the internet, radio, TV and even flyers to get the word out about their event. Marketing, when done properly, usually takes up a fairly substantial portion of the concert promoters budget.

A successful concert promoter understands how to advertise to get the most people to buy tickets for the show. They’ve got to have a good sense of the band that they’re promoting as well as their fans. Whether a concert attracts a huge audience or a small one depends on how well the event was promoted, plain and simple. Concert promoters really have one objective; to make sure that enough tickets sell to make a profit. Ideally, all the tickets will sell for every night or day the event will run, but that’s not guaranteed.

The location, size and even layout of a venue has to be taken into consideration by the concert promoter. In order to put on a great rock concert, everything has to be just right. Everything must be considered, from band dressing rooms to the house sound system and lighting. Pleasing the band is only part of the story though. The audience has to be taken care of as well, both inside and outside the venue. Things like security, parking and even restroom facilities all fall under the concert promoters watchful eye.

At some concerts, the concert promoter will have to pitch in and help in other ways. Concert promoters are usually responsible for making sure things are ready for the band. This might include setting up the stage, doing sound-checks and lighting adjustments. Quite often it also means they’ll have to decorate the venue to suit the concert.

At smaller events, the concert promoter is often responsible for collecting tickets or working the merchandise table. At certain types of events, they may even have the task of checking ID’s at the door the day of the event. Promoters are often also responsible for helping to break down the stage used by the band. Clean-up after the concert may also be the promoters job, depending on the negotiated contract.

Being a concert promoter can be exciting, rewarding and risky, but it’s worth it. Concert promoters have great jobs because they work directly with the musicians. Besides that and the fact that the income can be excellent, remember, they’ve got some of the best seats in the house at every show.

I have always been a big you rock and roll fan. Entering my late 20s, and not yet married (ladies, that means I’m available), it’s obvious that I know what it takes a party and I mean party well. So when I go to a rock and roll show, they should reserve tickets for me, without a doubt. I mean, I am the life of the rock ‘n roll show. But when I checked out Bon Jovi tour dates (Bon Jovi is my all time favorite rocker), and tried to order myself some tickets, I was in for a huge surprise. I tried all of the ticket agents, all of the Web sites, but there were no Bon Jovi concert tickets to the had!

Yeah, I know what you are thinking. I should have started looking for Bon Jovi concert tickets before the last minute. Don’t think that normally I wouldn’t, but I had the unpleasant situation of fighting a custody battle over my kid and the repossession of my house and all my belongings, things have been a little busy to say the least. Anyway, I have dozens of connections here in my home city. I know roadies, managers and staff in every venue in this area, practically. Now with that said you would think that with all that I’d be able to score some lousy Bon Jovi concert tickets, even if I had to settle for nosebleeds. But no way, no how. Ouch, that hurts.

So, I summon the up my courage, and thought that I would have to get my Bon Jovi concert tickets from those dreaded parasites known as scalpers. I hate buying from scalpers man, especially now with my current financial situation, and I like to know that all my dough is going directly to keep Jon Bon Jovi rocking hard, that’s how faithful I am. It is definitely not my intention to make money for some lousy scalper. So, I got to the stadium something like two hours before the big rock ‘n roll show to try to find my Bon Jovi concert tickets, but no such luck. I couldn’t find anyone willing to part with those precious little beauties for less than – now get this – two hundred dollars, each. I don’t care how many beers I get to drink in there, or how many hotties flashing the band. There is no way that’s worth two hundred dollars. Not for a two hour show with an opening band taking up some of the time.

Then, suddenly, as if by divine intervention, I stumbled on him. Some kid just out of college. Said his buddy wasn’t able to make it because he was sick, and he was selling his Bon Jovi concert tickets for –check this out– sixty bucks. Well, he was instantly surrounded, but I elbowed everyone aside and got to him first. Kid thought I was nuts, but I got the tickets. Rock on dudes!

The Chicago northern suburb of Highland Park is host to a two very notable locations. One is the home of Michael Jordan, a mansion easily identified by a very large number 23 attached to a pair of black iron gates which adorn the property.

The other celebrated destination is the Ravinia Park Pavilion, an outdoor concert venue which has been the summer home of the Chicago Symphony Orchestra since 1936. Musical acts from classical to jazz to pop frequent the Pavilion from May through September. The venue features 3200 seats as well as a large grassy area used for lawn seating which happens to be all the rage of those who frequent the facility. Apparently Ravinia just isn’t Ravinia unless one is seated on the lawn.

So having never partaken of the vaunted venue, when one of my all-time favorite bands was on the bill at the Pavilion, I decided to go with the rage. Breaking from my insane tradition of paying premium scalper prices for the best seats possible, I opted for the much revered and highly recommended lawn seats.

I was expecting an enjoyable evening watching one of my favorite bands perform at a highly regarded facility. What I experienced was something altogether different. Not a soul who had ever mentioned this “wonderful venue” to me had included the fact that the band cannot be seen from the lawn. Did you catch that? You cannot see the band from the lawn seats. The stage is located in what is essentially a large pit which is not visible from the lawn. Who in their right mind goes to see a band that they can’t see?

So, accepting the situation for what it was, I resigned myself to just chilling out on the grassy knoll, checking out the crowd and listening to the band. Although I don’t consider myself uncultured, I’d like to think that I’m not pretentious, which is exactly why I don’t fit in at Ravinia.

I saw some “see how cultured and refined I am” shit that looked like it was straight out of a circa 1980s John Hughes film: people sitting there with tables topped with fondue sets, cheese collections, various wines and, check this…I even spotted a pair of candelabra.

If your idea of a good time at a concert is sitting on the ground, unable to even see the band, you might as well slip into the alley behind the Riv, throw a blanket down next to a dumpster and do some quality rat watching as you listen to the band. At least rats aren’t pretentious enough to require that a candelabrum be present in order to eat their cheese.

The last people who catch the heat are the performers, although many times the problems surfacing at a scheduled concert can be laid at their feet. But the bottom line is there would be no concert without the performers. So what’s the chance that the performers are going to be held responsible. Now while it wasn’t a concert per se, the performance during the infamous super bowl half time show by Janet Jackson when there was the costume problem, the crap that flew because of that was laid at the feet of the artists. I personally think it did nothing but boost Miss Jackson’s appeal and give her career a little kick in the pants.

Whichever way you look at it, budding young concert promoter hopefuls are going to have a tough time breaking into the big time. But there is plenty of opportunity for a young aggressive business type to work on a regional level and hone his or her skill. It’s a fact that people love music. And music of all types. As proof of that I offer up the fact that in our local area, every year there is a big Accordion festival. Yes I said, Accordion. And it draws scores of fans. And I’m not talking about 40 fans sitting on a couple of benches. People come from all over the country to perform at the concert. And on top of that, music buffs from all over the country travel here to attend the festival. Go figure. Next time you see someone eating a bratwurst……who knows, they may be a big accordion fan.

Concert Promotions is a fascinating business and has a seemingly magical lure to a lot of people, but it is a very tough road to travel. There are many other jobs or careers that offer better chances of success, but the cachet connected with the music industry is just too strong for many to resist.

Farm Aid was formed 23 years ago by Willie Nelson, Neil Young and John Mellencamp as America’s farmers were struggling to keep their farms. An annual concert event, Farm Aid has since raised more than 30 million dollars and 2008 is sure to be a banner year.

Farm Aid came to Mansfield, Massachusetts on Saturday, September 20, 2008. Farm Aid had never been held in its home state of Massachusetts and the timing was perfect. And with New England weather being ever unpredictable, someone put in a good word with Mother Nature; we couldn’t have asked for a more beautiful day in New England!

Farm Aid’s mission is to ‘keep family farmers on their land’. Farm Aid does this by “Promoting Food from Family Farms, Growing the Good Food Movement, Helping Farmers Thrive and Taking Action to Change the System”. Farm Aid’s volunteers and family farmers were out in full force to spread the word to the 20,000 attendees at the Comcast Center in Mansfield, Massachusetts.

At Farm Aid 2008 were food vendors who sold only organic or farm sourced food. Not your average concert food of pretzels, hotdogs and candy bars, concert-goers were able to purchase grilled corn on the cob, pork chop sandwiches, burritos with about 10 choose-your-own fixings, fresh fruit, caramel apples, fruit smoothies, nachos, veggie burgers, hamburgers, pizzas and of course lots of beer.

Aside from the food and beverage vendors, Farm Aid sponsors were giving away bags and back packs, lip balm, photos, organic milk samples and much, much more.

And for those who wanted to speak with farmers and learn more about what and how they do what they do, there was the HOMEGROWN Village. Concert-goers even had the opportunity to get their own hands dirty in compost!

The doors to Farm Aid opened at noon and the concerts began around 1:30. The first few groups sang only 2-3 songs each. We heard from One Flew South who sang their newly released song My Kind of Beautiful, which was a highlight of my afternoon! They sound great on their CD, but in person they sound even better!

Jakob Dylan and the Gold Mountain Rebels sang 4-5 songs. Jakob was fantastic and looks and sounds more like his dad as the years pass! Consider it a compliment.

We also heard from The Pretenders, who showed us that even after nearly 30 years and all new band members, Chrissie Hynde is truly an artist who has stayed faithful to her rock and roll roots.

Besides One Flew South, I was most looking forward to seeing legend and Rock n Roll Hall of Famer Jerry Lee “Killer” Lewis perform. And he was fantastic! Jerry Lee Lewis performed 5 songs, including Roll Over Beethoven, Whole Lotta Shakin Goin On, and my favorite Great Balls of Fire! I never would have thought that the whole pavilion would be on their feet for Jerry Lee Lewis, but that’s exactly where they were! It was spell binding and Jerry Lee proved exactly why he is a legend! I have now seen one of the greatest Rock and Roll legends of all time and I can’t tell you how exhilarating it was!

Around 6:30 pm Kenny Chesney was set to take the stage. Swoon. Kenny performed about 8 songs, acoustically. That was a surprise. I had never seen Kenny perform but had seen and heard some of his concerts on video, so I was expecting BIG and crazy!

Kenny sat on a stool, along side two other musicians, and he sang some great songs. Willie Nelson came out to help Kenny with his final two songs and I have to say I never laughed harder when Kenny sang the lyrics (which I had never before heard), “at two I went home with a 10 and at 10 I woke up with a two!”. He laughed about it with the audience and told us that he’s certain it has happened to a few of us too!

After Kenny Chesney came Farm Aid board members Dave Matthews, John Mellencamp, Neil Young and Willie Nelson. I can’t say enough about their performances, so I’ll encourage you to go to the Farm Aid Web site yourself and watch their performances! They are nothing short of stellar!

Other performers at Farm Aid 2008 included Arlo Guthrie, moe., Grace Potter and the Nocturnals, Steve Earle, Nation Beat, Jamey Johnson, Jesse Lenat, Will Daley (from Boston!), Danielle Evin and someone new on my radar, The Elms!

Presented by Whole Foods Market and Horizon Organic and hosted by Carson Daly and Bob Costas, Farm Aid 2008 was broadcast live on Direct TV, who announced that if Direct TV subscribers donated to Farm Aid they would match their contributions to $50,000. I was going to tell you that the cost will be worth it. But I’m not sure I can. No one can. You know yourself, your business, your finances, your savings, your kids, your parenting. I can give you all the information in the world, but only you can make the decision. You know I spent hours on the web looking for articles I could send to you. To help you overcome this craziness. Because that’s what it is, crazy. I mean come on, a 14 yr old with this much power. And she’s the innocent one. It’s the news, the media, the paparazzi, the neighbors next door going to the concert, peer pressure, your kids puppy dog eyes, the scalpers, the sell out, that’s making it near impossible, you might as well win the lotto.

So, instead of other articles, I decided to share my own, personal story with you.

I remember a memorable time with my oldest daughter, Jennifer, who is 24 years old. We went to see the “So You Think You Can Dance” Tour of 2006 with Benji. What a blast! After the show a crowd gathered outside the back door to try to catch a glimpse of the dancers coming out. 1 ½ hours we waited. It was fun though, talking to the other fans, reliving the dances, the season and the stories of how we got our tickets. Finally, the dancers came out and stayed out and visited, talked and took pictures with all of us. I mean I have a close up with Benji and myself as if we are a couple. My daughter with her favorite, Travis. I think they must of stayed out 1 ½ hours with us. It was very memorable, very much worth it. Getting the tickets was my first try in a very long time. It was the same story as I have heard over and over again now as with Hannah. I was on the phone, my daughter was on another phone, both of us at 9:55 am. Operator says tickets are going fast better get them quick. And what took up time was the shock we were in, saying over and over again, how could that be, it’s only 10:02.

Eventually we got tickets. But then getting to the arena was another story, traffic, getting lost, being late. But after all was said and done, what an experience we had together. I can’t tell you what it meant to share the experience with her. As we sat in the car going home I could hear the words she was saying, Oh my gosh mom, I can’t believe it, that was great, over and over again as she looked through her pictures on her digital camera. But her face, I’ll never forget. Her wind blown hair, a tear in her eyes, the blush on her cheeks, the grin and smile just enhanced her beautiful face. She was my ‘little’ girl again. I did it, I made her completely happy which made me feel free, light as a feather, nothing else mattered at that moment. Sounds a little crazy huh. Not to me, and not to her. And that’s all that matters. I wouldn’t change it for anything.

So…am I suggesting that you bear down and pay the price no matter what. Go for that total happiness high with your 8 year old. Not necessarly.

But…it might be right for some of you. Look it took me 24 years to get that high with my daughter, it might take you 8 it might take you 34. That doesn’t mean this concert is right for everybody. Look – I look at it in a different perspective. When you go to Vegas you bring what you can afford to lose, and you have a great time. You don’t really expect to bring the $ home right. So IF you CAN afford to lose it to higher scalped prices, (because face it, you probably by now aren’t going to get one at face value), and when you get home you can STILL pay your mortgage, do it, do it, do it. You wouldn’t regret it. Make it a date night, Do it up, go out to dinner, get her a Hannah hair do, do each others nails, no interruptions, give her all you attention for those few hours. You won’t regret it.

But, if you can’t seriously afford it, don’t. Some experts say as time goes on, prices go down. Maybe they will become more affordable for you, but still maybe even if they come down, maybe its not right for you, right now. It’s a game, and not a fun one. Don’t consider yourself a loser, or a disappointment to your child. Will they be sad, absolutely. Will they recover, absolutely, and you can be a big part of that. You can show your child the new articles, have them read them, or read to them all the commotion this tour has brought. The thousands of kids, some very ill wishing they could fulfill their dream to see Hannah. This concert is not the end to Hannah or Miley or your child.
