Dave Brubeck in Concert at Orchestra Hall. Chicago, Ill. Mid 60’s

Orchestra Hall, a monument to Beaux Arts architecture located just a little south on Chicago’s “Miracle Mile”, was designed before the days of equality for the masses. It was, up to that point, a place to enjoy opera and symphony and such. In order to get to the cheap seats you hiked up 7 (or was it 10?) stories through a winding, narrow, windowless corridor that only accommodated one way, single file traffic. This set up allowed adoring, but economically challenged, fans to get to seats in the roost without disturbing the “real” customers. The seats ran to the top of the Hall and the incline was as close to 45 degrees as engineering could safely construct. This may not sound like a recipe for having a good time but the Hall lived up to its conceit in some ways. The acoustics, for example, were celebrated and legendary. Also, in the 50’s, a “jazz concert” as opposed to a “jazz set”, particularly in such rarefied air, was a different kind of party and a bow to Jazz’ growing recognition as a “legitimate art” form.
The night of the event was cold and punctuated by some sort of weather disturbance that I, and my crew, (obviously) thought unremarkable for a Chicago winter. We were there to see the Dave Brubeck (featuring Paul Desmond) and Gerry Mulligan Quartets. And if we had to sit on top of the building we would have. We were young enough to make the ascent to the top with minimal damage or complaint and the prospects were way too delicious to be dampened by weather and steps. As long as our noses didn’t bleed from the altitude we were happy.
The Dave Brubeck Quartet was scheduled to go first. After some announcements that I don’t remember, the crowd quieted and exhibited the decorum to which the high-toned venue was accustomed. The curtain parted and there THEY were at a casual ready. There was Ron Crotty on the bass, Lloyd Davis on the drums, Paul Desmond on the alto sax and Brubeck, with huge glasses rimmed to match his shiny black grand piano, on the keys. The set immediately and unceremoniously opened with one of the soon-to-be-jazz classics which are now recognizable by the first bar – and proceeded from there. Can’t remember the exact offerings but I can remember how it felt.
Subsequent liner notes have said it all in better words that I can command. Genius; Controlled soaring; Astonishing…respectful… challenging interplay. Innovative timing. Surprising improvisation. In addition, there was just enough of an interjection of a classically trained mind to let you know how Bach devotees, back in the day, felt upon first hearing his music. The absolute artistry of everyone involved ate away at the reserve the Hall usually inspired. The atmosphere became infused with the hums, wry smiles and spontaneous claps and responses of a real JAZZ audience, which, we would soon learn, was the same no matter the venue.
At the break it was announced that Gerry Mulligan’s flight had been delayed as a result of the weather. Small decorous groan. Brubeck and company resumed but in the middle of an offering, a harried and bedraggled looking Gerry Mulligan lurched on to the stage (half carrying/ half propelled by his ridiculously large horn) with his group straggling behind. Any Orchestra Hall-tied decorum that had been left at that point in time was immediately lost.
After some adjustments Mulligan took the floor and proceeded to exorcize the frustrations that accompany delayed travel, nasty weather and other assorted challenges to his usual cool. The group- usually sartorially perfect in (very) narrow suits and ties but now mismatched and rumpled- pushed, drove, strode, charged and jammed for another hour. The audience went into tent revival mode.
But there was more…
Just about the time that we were sure we were going to be thrown out, Brubeck and Desmond returned – just ambled back out from the wings. All hell broke loose.
With a minimal amount of chit chat – or that’s the way I remember it – everybody involved launched into the first piece of another full set. Desmond and Mulligan romanced, challenged and dueled. Brubeck, hunched over the shiny black grand, flashed his devious cleverness and exhibited a little less cool and a lot more intensity. It was at least 1 am and nobody was moving an inch.
About an hour later, we found ourselves on a crisp, deserted Michigan Avenue. I don’t even remember the descent from our perch high above the stage. The audience was still in the unity of the experience and had not yet disintegrated into individuals. They still carried the awe and were congratulating each other on being in the right place at the right time. And then the famous Chicago “hawk” reminded us of where we were. We moved deeper into our coats and hurried to our cars but we were warm all the way home.

Best Kid Rock Concert

Posted by Concert List | Posted in Online Concert | Posted on 10-02-2009

I wanted to get my friend something great for his birthday and I knew that Kid Rock was coming to town. I had to find a way to find the best Kid Rock tickets that I could so I did a lot of searching until I finally found the perfect ones. I paid the money and we both went to the concert and had the time of our lives.

Kid Rock tickets are a great opportunity to have for any of his concerts. They are wild and crazy and you are never going to know what will happen next. The music is loud and creative and all of the people are dancing and singing and having the best time of their lives. Every song was a hit and we could not have asked for a better show.

Kid Rock sang all of his best songs and some other ones from other artists. It did not matter if the song was his or some one else’s’, he was the one singing and that made it the best time. We all started to sing along with him and danced the entire night away.

There were people of all ages with their Kid Rock tickets in hand and waiting to get into the gate. They were all so excited to get to see their favorite rock star in person. There were young people and there were older ones too. They were all there for one reason and that was to see Kid Rock perform.

He fits all kinds of people’s personalities. They are all so excited to see him and could only hope for his autograph. That would be a dream come true for a lot of his fans. They were hoping to catch just a peak of him to see if they could get just a touch of his skin. Everyone was yelling and cheering him on and wanted more and more as the night came to a close.

Kid Rock did come out for an encore and everyone was singing and screaming for more. He was the best and defiantly worth every penny. I would recommend for anyone who gets the chance to get Kid Rock tickets and take in the show. They will have the best time of their lives and want to see when the next concert is coming to town. If you did not like him before, you will love him after.

Got Those Concert Tickets Now Have A Great Night

Posted by Concert List | Posted in Concert List | Posted on 09-02-2009

Now that you have your dream concert tickets, how can you guarantee to have a great night. Well the only way is to plan, What you may ask needs planning ”I’ve got the tickets” what else is there well what about the venue, eating before or after, getting there, security and getting home.

Most modern concert venues are extremely large and are capable of holding thousands of people. And almost all of them have multiple entry and exit points a good idea before you arrive at your venue is to know your entry point the last thing you need is to be searching for the right door 5 minutes before the start with 2000 other people.

Parking. It is imperative that you have this worked out beforehand you do not want to walk a great distance both before and after the event or even be looking for parking when you should be in the concert.

Eating before hand is also fraught with danger, what I do is book a restaurant beforehand, at booking I ask them how long does it takes to get served. After all you don’t want to leave the meal half way through, or worse be late for the show and remember don’t drink too much as it will impact on those around you and your own enjoyment.

Getting there and home again is always an important consideration, in many venues there is insufficient parking at peak times, so it is sometimes best to catch public transport check the arrival times and distance to venue from the drop off point, once again you don’t want to be late. Another great thing about public transport is that you are able to have a couple of drinks and not drive home which is always a plus.

Security, after a concert I tend to wait at the venue for 15 to 20 minutes so as to let the crowd disperse it is dangerous when so many people are all trying to leave at the same time. If you are picking up younger concert goers they will be much easier to see once the crowd has gone. Venue security will still be around at this stage thus making it safer for youngsters, remember to designate a specific pick up point for them and give them a mobile phone in case a problems arises.

Whilst this is not a definitive list it does show you that there are things to sort out before you depart home to make things more enjoyable.

Remember to enjoy yourself but be safe

Fiona Apple in Concert; She Does it All

Posted by Concert List | Posted in Online Concert | Posted on 07-02-2009

Fiona Apple in concert is a must see. Fiona grew up with entertainer parents and she has incredible talent indeed. She can play the piano like no other and her array of musical skills is unparalleled. She can put on a show of raw emotion in concert and light up a crowd like there is no tomorrow.

She can sing and her voice inflection has such a wide range it is almost as if she is several great singers in one. It is as if there is nothing she cannot do. Luckily we got some tickets to see her in Washington DC and it was a sell-out crowd and unfortunately sold out parking too, nevertheless she was unbelievable.

This stunning young lady not only makes great music, she can really rock a crowd. Fiona Apple in Concert; well, She Does it All. She plays, she dances, she entertains and she can sing like no other. I do not know where she learned to play the piano like that but wow! And she is very young for an entertainer of her caliber.

When she tours near you, you must go see Fiona Apple in concert and buy her CD. The band was magnificent indeed as well, what a team they have. This is a must see concert and if you have the chance take it and you will be glad you did. Consider all this in 2006.

Rock Concert Discount Tickets Thru Alternative Energy Lighting

Posted by Concert List | Posted in Online Concert | Posted on 06-02-2009

Can we use the roar of the high intensity crowd and all their human energy to light up the stadium? If we can use all this high energy, can we get a discount on our tickets for the energy savings? How about a Rock Concert discount tickets thru Alternative Energy Lighting Program? Sounds good to me? But is it really possible to light up a stage and all the lighting using vibrational energy from all the people packed in?

It maybe possible by placing large 4 x 8’ sandwich sheets with a taunt film on the vibrational side and small copper lined tubes, hundreds of them running perpendicular to the sheets, with magnets inside bouncing back and forth. These magnets will charge a capacitor and be hooked up to an LED lighting system using fiber optics or reflectors, each one hooked up to a .2 to .5 watt light. With hundreds of thousands of lights hooked up in a composite format it will light up the stage and building.

Currently this technology is being used in those little flashlights you see advertised on television that you shake and they light, but you never need batteries. This idea of lighting up the stadium is using that technology on a larger scale with miniaturized parts making up the guts between the sandwich sheets. Let there be light, thru vibrational energy and there was. Think on it.

Gateway to Relief – Movie & Concert Tickets

Posted by Concert List | Posted in Concert List | Posted on 05-02-2009

It would only be an understatement and repetition to state that movies or concerts are the greatest stress busters. A formula that like Harry Porters blockbusters never fail. Why only in pepping up people, they are also a sure short remedy for such afflictions like headaches.

Several people have experienced the magical effect of music on a suffering head. Sure enough it squeezes the pain out of ones system and replaces it with freshness that only a man who is suffering from such menace as headache would value.

Similar thing can be said about movies which have the power to carry people along with it and till the time lights are not switched on one is away with Brad Pitt or Sylvester Stallone doing some unbelievable action sequence. Sure enough poor headache would find that there is no place for it and very soon would vanish!

It would therefore not be a misnomer to conclude that tickets to movies or concerts are like gateway to relief. Then, whether it is a case of depression or physical affliction, both music and movies prove to be the greatest healers.

Promote Your Concert – 11 Tips for Bigger Crowds

Posted by Concert List | Posted in Concert Promotion | Posted on 04-02-2009

How well attended was your last concert? If you were playing to an empty hall or your band outnumbered the attendees, you need to promote your concert in a big way!

Consider all the advertising avenues available to promote your concert

On-line promotion sites…

There are many of them on-line. Do a search for “concert promotion” or “event publicity” and you will find several.

Set up your own web site…

If you don’t have your own site, set up a Blogger blog. These are free and easy to use, and you have an instant URL to provide to the public. If you’ve got an additional 9 or 10 bucks, register a domain name and redirect it to the Blogger blog.

Provided detailed directions to the site venue. Include parking information and any traffic snafus that your audience might encounter on the way.

Make a Youtube video…

Youtube is one of the most visited sites on the planet. Even a basic video with info about the concert will work. A sneak peek of the show might pull in more fans, too!

Put up a Myspace page…

Myspace is hot, especially with young people.

Don’t forget Squidoo…

Google loves Squidoo.

Issue a press release…

Try this site…

Webwire.com

It costs $19, but the big Search Engines (including Google) love it, probably because the charge keeps the junk out.

Radio stations…

A well-placed ad can be heard by more people than you might think, especially during “drive times.” Your advertising budget will dictate how much you can spend and which station you can use, but don’t be afraid to contact all the stations in your area. They might have some leftover air time you can pick up cheap.

Television…

Local cable stations are a bargain. Local network affiliates often feature community bulletin boards.

Newspapers…

Local papers often have a section where your event can be listed for free.

Flyers…

These are effective when posted on high-traffic-area bulletin boards, such as you find on college campuses. Avoid placing flyers in places that can get you in trouble, such as on car windshields. Local businesses might put them in their windows for you.

Word of mouth…

If your group has a lot of members, such as a high school band, challenge everyone to invite at least five people. 100 members x 5 invitees = 500 people in your crowd!

Miscellaneous…

Make T-shirts advertising the event.

Get car magnets for your vehicles.

Put a big sign on a parked vehicle in a conspicuous place.

Promote your concert and pull in a huge crowd as well as big ticket receipts!

Cyberflute is a top on-line flute resource. Got a flute-related event coming up? Post it here…

Looking To Apply Concert Lighting To Outdoor Area

Posted by Concert List | Posted in Concert Promotion, Country Music | Posted on 03-02-2009

If you’ve ever been to a concert then you have probably been wowed by the amazing display of lighting. The techniques used in

musical concert are only used to enhance the mood of the music being played. Whether it’s indoor or outdoor these lighting

techniques uses subtleties in order to highlight the band playing without being to overwhelming.

Are you looking for something new for you landscaping? Concert lighting outdoors could be the special addition you need. Here

are some tips to help you with your concert outdoor lighting.

Rule #1 – Back Lights

If we compare concert outdoor lighting to real concert lighting, the major difference is that during a real concert, most of

the light comes from the front, they use big spotlights and flood lights to illuminate the center of the action. Has for

concert outdoor lighting the light should always come from behind what you are trying to illuminate. You see your goal is to

establish a relaxing mood and identify what you are trying to light at the same time. You will achieve this by placing the

lights behind, creating an interesting play of shadow and light.

Rule #2 – Who’s the star?

Most of the time musical formations have a leader; this leader is the one we see the most. This rule can also be applied to

your concert outdoor lighting; we will need to determine what the masterpiece of your concert outdoor lighting setup is. It

could be things like:

- Decorative fountain
- Your prize Rosebush
- Or any other part of your landscape.

But choose the one that you like the most. This is where we deviate from the rule #1. This center piece alone is the only one

who is allowed to have any light come from the front, this is the only exception.

Rule #4 – Colors are important

One of the most important factors about your concert outdoor lighting is colors. Most people don’t realize that the color of

your lighting plays an important role in the mood you are trying to create. This is easily achievable since today most

outdoor lighting fixtures are available with LED displays, which can easily, at very little cost, provide color to your

concert outdoor lighting.

Rule #5 – Use Variety and Simplicity

To create an amazing display of light you will need to use different and complementary colors for your back lights. The same

goes for what you will use to illuminate your centerpiece. The goal here is to set the mood without illuminating too much,

this is very important. Don’t fall in the trap of illuminating too much, this will create glare and your concert outdoor

lighting setup will be too bright to look at in the dark. As I said, use color for your back lights to set a relaxing mood.

Make sure you follow These 5 basics rules, doing this will make sure you have an amazing outdoor concert lighting display.
