There is more live music going on in Austin, Texas on any given night than there is in any other city in the world. That’s why the city has put a trademark on it’s message “Live Music Capital of the World.”

There are hundreds of live music Venues in the city and its immediate environs.  A lot of are situated in three central entertainment districts: Sixth Street/Red River, the Warehouse district and South Austin. The road to its live music capital status began way back in the 1960’s when a spirit of eclecticism appeared with the hippies and anti-war protesters of that era. Inclusion has been in and exclusion has been out, no pun intended. With the 70’s, this eclectic spirit gave birth to a form of music that has been again and again called progressive country. Joe Ely, along with co-Lubbockites Jimmy Dale Gilmore and Butch Hancock, brought this music down to Austin and hooked up with Marcia Ball and Delbert McClinton and cosmic cowboys like Jerry Jeff Walker, Michael Martin Murphy, Rusty Weir and Ray Wiley Hubbard. Willie Nelson and Waylon Jennings came back from Nashville during that time to performance tle in Austin where they can take control of the production of their songs. A wild and compelling musical vortex formed that saw psychedelic rock and roll mix with straight out country and blues at Clubs such as the Armadillo World Headquarters, Threadgill’s, the Soap Creek Saloon and the Broken Spoke. It has been cool to dig the psychedelic sound of the 13th Floor Elevators and the uncompromising country licks of Alvin Crow at the same time.

Then, in 1975, a 30-minute University of Texas music program has been accepted by a number of PBS affiliate stations and Austin City Limits has been launched and has become the longest running program in the history of PBS. In more recent years, the South by Southwest showcase every Spring that brings nearly 1500 musicians and musical acts to town to be seen and heard by industry executives and AR types, along with the Austin City Limits Festival in September, have kept the city on the national music map.  In addition,  dozens of other smaller festivals are held each year, as well as a number of nationally meaningful ones in the surrounding Hill Country such as the Kerrville Folk Festival and the Old  set tlers Reunion in Buda, just south of town.

The Austin music scene has always been a free-wheeling, break-the-mold, think-out-of-the-box kind of affair. That early eclecticism lives on in the current scene, although some characteristics of the town’s soundscape seem to have become entrenched. Music has always played a major part of my life, as from the earliest age I might recall classical music constant ly playing in our home. Dad had many 78s and an electric player which necessitated frequent needle vary s. In fact I used to watch him vary them religiously every eight plays – not something he would let anybody at all else do!!

As children, all of us used to give singing recitals – especially at Christmas times!! I am grateful for the exposure our parents gave us to music – even if dad was a bit single minded when, in the late 50’s my brother Kenneth, bought home a recording of a new rock-n-roll singer called Buddy Holly I think dad thought it was not proper music and that the record couldn’t possibly be up to the same standard as his Beethoven or Mozart recordings!!

He used to have constant discussions with Kenneth about playing them on his’ radiogram. And as for the Beatles and Rolling Stones records I wanted to play a few years later – no comment!!

Both my two brothers were taught to performance classical music on the piano by our Aunty Win. For myself; it has been 1962 and I has been far too interested in my Uncle Frank’s brand new MGB roadster to concentrate – try as my mum did to  encourage  me!!

My eldest brother, Robert, turned out to be a highly accomplished musician – playing the French horn professionally for many years. Kenneth, my other brother, in later years, would get all his beer bought for him in the NAFFI bar, bashing out tunes when all of us had a  set – mind you he always had a bad head the next day!

After I left home and joined the British Armed Forces, I have to say my mates weren’t too happy about Grieg being played in the barrack room. Same problem as my dad had – varying music. So I had to use earphones to listen to him. But when ‘The Who’ came on – now, that has been a varying story – then we used to get into trouble with the Duty Sergeant for playing the music too loud!!

Anyway, over the years, I’ve developed a passion for all categories of music and my collection of vinyl records has now grown to include Amadeus Mozart through to Led Zeppelin. But, I guess if I had to select just one piece of music to take to that desert island it’d have to be -

I bought this recording whilst stationed in Ger a lot of in 1970 – since then I have obtain ed other fine recordings of the Concerto, but I find Karl Leister’s interpretation of the Adagio(in particular) perfectly captures Mozart’s objective of writing the most profoundly expressive movement for a solo instrument.

A prominent political figure from a Muslin nation visited one our University recently to speak and answer questions, and I watched the president of that institution challenge him and attack him verbally. There was no peace in the words he used to describe his guest, he’d his mind made up that this man represented the enemy and a war of words was in order. It was undeniable to everyone that this man and his country were works of the devil and it was our duty to eliminate him first by dehumanizing him, and then by threats of war.

The guest answered the questions as perfect he can ; he knew that the majority of the audiences would not accept his words, but he tried to explain his country’s position on several topics that struck fear in the hearts of Americans; but our thoughts had already established that this man was an individual to hate. He on the other hand, stood his ground firmly and explained his position as obvious ly as he can given the atmosphere of emotions that surrounded him. He did not claim to hate or want to destroy us, he said he wanted to be our friend; he said that his religion was a peaceful one and that his country wanted to live by their beliefs in the absence of interference from other nations. He saw the conflict in Iraq as a senseless attempt to control something that was not under our control; it had been in existence for centuries before all of us were born as a country and always found a way to resolve its own issues. In the mist of all the anger and resentment he found himself in, he maintain his composure and expressed his emotions about how all of us had created the situations all of us found ourselves involved in, and that all of us were the ones that are forcing other nations to conform unconditionally.

The real issue isn’t about this man and his country; it is about each one of us. As Alan said, we must find the peace in our hearts in order to repair our separation. If we are motivated by fear, anger, and hatred, that is what we will manifest; the face of this man was that manifestation.

We do not practice what all of us preach in church each Sunday, all of us do not follow the teachings of Christ if all of us attack and fight in order to control. Destroying never brings repair ing, but forgiveness does. Through all the years of fighting all of us still do not get the idea of unity; all of us still put ourselves up on a higher plane of existence; all of us are disconnected from our source and do nothing but fight in order to reconnect; years of conditioning has made us what all of us are, a group of wanderers looking for redemption in all the wrong ways. It is us against everything else, when in fact there is nothing else; what all of us see is a mirror, there for us to remember who all of us really are.

Alan said something else in his book, ” The the majority meaningful contribution you and I could make toward world peace is to be peaceful ourselves, to give peacefulness to those whose lives all of us touch daily, and to forgive ourselves for our errors, to the point at which all of us love ourselves no matter what all of us have ever done.”

Now is the time for that forgiveness; now is the time to reunite within myself, to be the spirit that expresses the love that fills my heart. I may change and will change in order to be at peace; I ask for help from my source and it’s given; I ask for love to fill my body and it’s given; I ask to share that love with all life and it’s given.
